Global Refrigeration Trends: Green Transition & System Integrity

The global refrigeration industry is undergoing a critical transition. Prompted by international mandates like the Kigali Amendment and the EU F-Gas Regulation, traditional hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) with high Global Warming Potential (GWP) are being phased out. They are being replaced by eco-friendly alternatives: natural refrigerants like Isobutane (R600a), Propane (R290), and Carbon Dioxide (R744), alongside hydrofluoroolefins (HFOs like R1234yf).

This chemical shift impacts filtration requirements. Many new refrigerants, particularly natural hydrocarbons and synthetic HFOs, exhibit different solubilities and thermodynamic interactions with compressor lubricants (such as polyol ester / POE oils). POE lubricants are highly hygroscopic—adsorbing environmental moisture at rates up to 100 times greater than traditional mineral oils. If moisture enters the system, it rapidly breaks down the POE oil back into its organic acid components, resulting in bearing wear, copper plating, and electric motor isolation failures.

To prevent this degradation, modern copper and molecular sieve filter driers must offer increased water capacity and chemical neutrality. Our filter driers utilize high-purity 3A molecular sieves, which exclude refrigerant molecules from their crystalline pore structures, targeting only water molecules (approx. 2.8Å). This prevents chemical breakdown of the refrigerant itself while maintaining high drying efficiency.

Why is a 3A molecular sieve used instead of 4A or 13X in filter driers?
A 3A molecular sieve has a pore diameter of approximately 3 Ångstroms, which is ideal for selectively adsorbing water molecules (approx. 2.8Å). It excludes larger refrigerant molecules (such as R134a or R410A) and lubricant molecules from entering the crystalline matrix.
